THE QUIET CRAFT KITCHEN

DEDHAM

Our showroom kitchen in Dedham, which you're welcome to come and see.

This is the kitchen we built for ourselves. There's no client brief behind it, so it shows what we'd do with a free hand: simple, honest and natural, neither contemporary nor period. It sits in the showroom for you to open, touch and try.

The Idea

We wanted a kitchen that feels as if it has always been there, and still wouldn't look out of place in ten years. A calm room, with the making doing the talking.

So we kept it quiet. There are no fussy details and no decoration for its own sake. The care is in the proportions, the joinery and the materials, and in how each of them is left to be what it is.

MATERIALS

  • Oak cabinetry: pale and softly textured, with the grain left visible. Doors and drawers sit within a slim, exposed oak frame, so the construction is part of the look.

  • Brushed stainless steel worktops: cool, practical and hard-wearing, and they make a good partner for warm timber.

  • Brass, used sparingly: socket plates, adjustable island feet and the rails inside the bar cabinet.

  • The original pine floor: worn, marked and full of character. Alongside the old oak beams, it roots the kitchen in the building without turning it into pastiche.

The details we’re proudest of

The curved sink unit. Its gently rounded end softens the whole room and makes it easier to move around.

The open shelving. A slender oak frame holds everyday bowls, a herb plant and a chopping board. It's styled lightly, as if it simply lives there.

The hidden bar. Folding doors open to a Miele wine cooler, hanging glass rails, brass rails, a slim wine rack and a warm strip of light along the shelf edge. Closed, it's just a calm oak cupboard.

The drawers. Dovetailed oak drawers and a fitted cutlery drawer with a hand-made knife block, lined in soft sage. These are the things you only notice when you open them, which is when you want them to be right.

Cooking, uncluttered. The induction hob has a downdraft extractor built in, so there's no hood to interrupt the lines or the light.
